Pergamonmuseum – Egyptian Museum Collection in the Pergamonmuseum Berlin

Planning for Restoration and Clearance of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin

As part of the Master Plan for Museum Island Berlin, the Pergamon Museum will undergo renovation and technical modernization in the coming years. A key element is the construction of a fourth wing, which will enable a main circuit showcasing the monumental architectural exhibits of ancient cultures on one level. Restoration planning for the relocation of all objects (approximately 48,000) of the Egyptian Museum within the Pergamon Museum has been underway. In this context, Jörg Breitenfeldt, as project leader for restoration at Restaurierung am Oberbaum GbR, was already responsible in 2002 for the restoration planning of the Egyptian Museum’s collection and Papyrus Collection housed in the Pergamon Museum. This primarily included thematic complexes for planning the clearance of collection depots in the Pergamon Museum. The planning encompasses the development of concepts for the restoration security and relocation of the collection objects of the Egyptian Museum in the Pergamon Museum. The range of these objects includes painted and unpainted stone, stucco, and plaster objects, fragments of wall paintings, metals, terracottas, mummies, painted wooden objects, textiles, ivory, plants, and the papyrus collection.

The planning involved developing concepts for disassembly, storage, restoration, and museum presentation.
