The proximity to the Tiergarten district influenced the development of the neighborhood along the Landwehr Canal. Initially, there was a loose construction of summer houses, which after the mid-19th century were replaced by four to five-story stately rental buildings. In the section between Potsdamer Bridge and Bendler Bridge, some large residential buildings have been spared from war destruction and demolition. Two four-story houses from the mid-19th century frame a later built five-story apartment building. The rental houses Schöneberger Ufer 61 and Schöneberger Ufer 57, built in 1858-59, are among the oldest buildings south of the Landwehr Canal. The prestigious residential location near the Tiergarten district is evident in their elaborate design. The late-classical facades are characterized by harmonious division with side risalits and gables and by fine ornamentation. The design was created by local craftsmen who acted as building contractors. City Masonry Master Albert Metzing developed the properties at Schöneberger Ufer 59 and 61, while Master Mason W. Reiniger and Master Carpenter R. Hosemann executed the similar rental houses at Schöneberger Ufer 55 and 57.
